Etymology: OE n{aelig}s, rel. to OE nasu NOSE NESS suffix forming nouns from adjectives, expressing: 1 state or condition, or an instance of this (bitterness; conceitedness; happiness; a kindness). 2 something in a certain state (wilderness).
