(pl. -ies) 1 an undertaking as to the ownership or quality of a thing sold, hired, etc., often accepting responsibility for defects or liability for repairs needed over a specified period. 2 (usu. foll. by for + verbal noun) an authority or justification. 3 an undertaking by an insured person of the truth of a statement or fulfilment of a condition.
