n. a member of a Jewish sect or party of the time of Christ that denied the resurrection of the dead, the existence of spirits, and the obligation of the traditional oral law (cf. PHARISEE, ESSENE). Derivatives Sadducean adj. Etymology: OE sadduceas f. LL Sadducaeus f. Gk Saddoukaios f. Heb. sed{ucirc}k{icirc}, prob. = descendant of Zadok (2 Sam. 8:17)
