palimpsest
n. 1 a piece of writing-material or manuscript on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for other writing. 2 a monumental brass turned and re-engraved on the reverse side. Etymology: L palimpsestus f. Gk palimpsestos f. palin again + psestos rubbed smooth PALINDROME n. a word or phrase that reads the same backwards as forwards (e.g. rotator, nurses run).
