- mid-15c., from L. nebula "mist," cognate with Gk. nephele, nephos "cloud," from PIE *nebh- "cloud." Originally used in Eng. of caratacts in the eye; astronomical meaning first recorded c.1730. Nebulous is L. nebulosus "cloudy, misty, foggy;" the figurative sense of "hazy, vague, formless" is from 1831.
