henchman
- 1463, hengsman "high-ranking servant," originally "groom," from O.E. hengest "horse, stallion, gelding," from P.Gmc. *khangistas "best at springing," from PIE *kenku-. Sense of "obedient or unscrupulous follower" is first recorded 1839 in Sir Walter Scott, who may have misunderstood the word when he resurrected it.
