- 1869, Eng. dial. jerry "bad, defective," a pejorative use of the male nickname Jerry, or from naut. slang jury, used of all sorts of makeshift and inferior objects, which is probably ult. from O.Fr. ajurie "help, relief," from L. adjutare (see aid).
