- 1543, from L. arthritis, from Gk. nosos arthritis "disease of the joints," from nosos "disease" + arthron "a joint" (from arariskein "to fit," from PIE *ar-dhro-, from *ar- "to fit together") + -itis feminine form of adj. ending -ites. (Gk. nosos is fem.). Arthritic was used in Eng. as an adj. and a noun from 14c.
